The late 1800s and early 1900s saw an unprecedented urbanization upsurge in the U.S. and China, a historical process which is frozen forever in the fictional texts of Theodore Dreisers Sister Carrie and Lao Shes Rickshaw. The metropolitan environment depicted in the novels is “a closed city” monopolized by the rich, an urban center where the poor is barred from by tangible or intangible boundaries such as walls, clothing, and money. As a symbol of industrialization and urbanization, machinery and speed constitute the objective that the protagonists in the fiction crave for and are bewitched by. In collusion with ecodeterioration, urbanization uproots the protagonists traditional agrarian way of life and traps them irretrievably in a socioecological milieu with both its material environment and mental environment increasingly sordid. In their novels Dreiser and Lao She respectively make a multidimensional inquiry into the course of urbanization in the U.S. and China, and reveal the causal complexes of such a process with respect to its socioeconomic, sociocultural, and socioecological phases.
