摘要: 英国20世纪著名的小说家、评论家E·M·福斯特在其重要小说评论文献《小说面面观》中提出了许多精辟独到的小说理论,如“圆形人物”、“扁形人物”以及“节奏”等。他的这些小说理论或观点在西方小说批评中产生了深远而广泛的影响,成为继亨利·詹姆斯与珀西·卢伯克之后的杰出小说理论家。他的小说“节奏”理论的提出不仅使人们认识到了小说艺术的一个崭新的“面”,而且也拓展了小说艺术批评的范畴。本文拟对福斯特的小说节奏观进行重新解读,指出其理论的偏颇性,进而尝试对其进行重新建构,为小说节奏研究打开一扇新的窗户。
The 20th century British famous novelist and critic E. M. Forster, in his important critical document Aspects of the Novel, put forth several insightful novelistic theories, such as “round” and “flat” characters and “rhythm”, etc. His theories as such have produced farreaching impact in the field of Western novel criticism, thus he was regarded as another outstanding novelistic theorist after Henry James and Percy Lubbock. His concept of rhythm has not only enabled us to recognize a new aspect of the art of fiction, but also helped to widen the area for criticism of the art of fiction. The article is an attempt, on the one hand, to reinterpret Forster's concept of rhythm, and on the other, to try to provide some new critical views so as to further improve his concept of rhythm in his own fictions, thus, it might open a new window for some fresh air.
