A great number of American Korean War novels are made up of POW novels, which report on the American POWs lives and experiences in the POW camps run by the Chinese Peoples Volunteer Army (PVA). In the meantime, these novels give inevitable sketches of the officers and soldiers of the PVA who guard the POWs. These sketches intended as an attack against the political education “imposed” by the PVA on the American POWs have ironically given a surprisingly similar and sympathetic description of the enemy soldiers, thus creating a collective image of the PVA as civilized human beings who treat their prisoners respectfully and kindly. To different degrees, this image can also be found in many Chinese and foreign nonfictions that treat the War to resist U.S.A. Aggression and Aid Korea, a typical example of which is General Ridgeways memoir on the war. Such an image of the PVA forcefully demonstrates the fact that the PVA have strictly abided by the provisions laid out by the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, and the PVAs own Lenient Policy.
